Birmingham Food Club Review: Post Office Pies, Sons Donuts/Big Spoon

So this is a little different than the usual stuff that I write about here, but since this is my blog I figured that I would try writing about food and new places that I have been going to. So a group of friends from work and I decided to start a Birmingham Food Club, with the main goal to go and try new places around Birmingham. After we try them, we would then do a ranking over different categories to come up with an average score out of ten using a .5 scale.

The first restaurant that was on the list was Post Office Pies, in Avondale (part of downtown Birmingham). Now for me, pizza has never been one of my favorite foods. I would take wings, burgers, tacos, pretty much anything over pizza. So when it was decided we were going to go to Post Office Pies for our first restaurant, I decided that I was going to give the pizza a shot because maybe this pizza was going to surprise me.

It did actually surprise me, we each order different pizzas so we could all try one. I decided to get a Saw’s Soul Pie BBQ pizza (Saw’s is a BBQ place in Birmingham). Saw’s Red BBQ sauce is the base instead of normal pizza sauce, topped with Saw’s pulled pork, red onions, and aged mozzarella. You are also given a side of Saw’s White BBQ sauce to drizzle on top. I actually really enjoyed it, partly because it did not taste a lot like pizza, but really good BBQ. It was also on thin crust and was not super greasy, which is usually the big turnoff for me when it comes to pizza.

Other pizzas that we tried were Franks Hot Buffalo Chicken, The Swine (pretty much a Meat Lovers) and a Build Your Own of chicken, red sauce, mozzarella, and a fried egg on top. All the pizzas were pretty good, but the Saw’s Soul Pie would be the reason that I would come back.

Post Office Pies was a pretty cool place that I would definitley want to go back to at some point. Not too big, cool rustic industrial look inside, a place that seems to have a lot of character to it. If any place can make me look forward to having a pizza again, then that place is a winner in my book. It was pretty loud when we went, but that could have just been the people who were there at the time we went.

We also went to 2 different places for desert: Big Spoon Creamery and Sons Donut. These two places are right next to each other in the same building. Big Spoon does ice cream with homemade waffle cones, and has a good mixture of classic flavors and more off the wall flavors. I decided to be a little risky and get something out of my comfort zone: Goat Cheese and Fig ice cream. I am not a big fan of Goat Cheese and I don’t think I have ever had figs or fig jam before. It was some of the best ice cream I have ever had in my life. Extremely creamy, with the fig jam that was in it adding a great sweet honey taste without being super over powering.

Sons Donuts was what some other people in our group got, and they make mini donuts to order which might be the craziest part since this was at 8:45PM at night and we were able to get fresh donuts. They were super warm and fluffy, pretty much melted in your mouth. You can definitley tell why these places are next to each other and in the same building, they just compliment each other very well. We rated each place on 6 categories: Atmosphere, Food, Drinks, Likelihood to Recommend, Value for Money, and Selections. Out of the 7 people that went (myself included) and averaging everything together, these are the overall results for the restaurants. Post Office Pies: 8 (actually was 7.89, but since we are working on a .5 scale, it was rounded up)

Sons Donuts/Big Spoon Creamery: 10

Both places were brand new to me, and they were both very enjoyable and I definitley could see myself introducing more people to each, especially Big Spoon and returning myself soon.
